More than a third of the students enrolled in higher education in this country attend two-year institutions. They live with parents. They pray for parking. But others do have the freedom to tailor their time. They just neglect to take advantage of it.

The New York Times College Scholarship Program Photo by Kathy Ryan Launched in 1999, this program is designed to reward New York City high school students who have achieved academic excellence while overcoming hardship or other difficult circumstances. Recipients receive four-year scholarships as well as mentoring and internship opportunities at The New York Times Company. We strongly believe in the lifelong benefits that a college education can impart, and we are pleased to assist and encourage promising students seeking that opportunity. The Times scholarship has always been a reminder to me that someone out there believes I can succeed, so how could I let doubt hold me down?
